With so many available recently, it is wise to have a name you can believe. The product is certainly that and will be a great buy. The manufacturer have included some great touches and this means great value. You can believe this review, i hope you can try to buy this product if you want know this product. Ok, so I've been looking for the perfect MP3 player *for me* for a while. You see, Apple shackles me to I-Tunes and Zune software makes me want to jam pencils into my eye sockets repeatedly. Yes, for me, the Zune was the perfect player until MS decided not to allow it to sync with their own Windows Media Player. Ever seen the lid of a pressure cooker fly off and smack the ceiling? That was me when I got a Zune and realized that it didn't sync with WMP or handle drag and drop. I want to be able to nav. by folder and drag and drop folders from explorer to the player, not because I'm a tech geek, but because I want to see it my way. Just because many people haven't realized that copy/paste works outside of MS Word, doesn't mean they should disallow people to be cool with basic file functions.
Enough of the rant. The Sansa Clip+ is a great player, but battery life is lacking and the screen is 4 line. Still a great sounding player with great expansion. Dig it. For me, I wanted folder nav., drag and drop, good battery life, tactile controls, great sound, a decent screen, durability, and a good price. Had hope for the Sansa Fuse+ Keep working on that touch/non-touch screen control debacle. Too bad man. Perfect in most other ways. The Cowon D2, which is discontinued was too hard to find, too expensive and is looking old in the UI dept. (But I could have lived with the touch screen. This was almost the perfect player but for the price and availability).
So enter the Samsung Q3. Unfortunately the 8GB doesn't ship to the USA yet. This one (4GB) will hold 30 albums or so + random pod casts. This isn't the type of player to backup your entire 1000 CD collection on. The only other weak point besides the capacity and lack of a microSD or SD card slot is that the start up I found to be a drag at 13 seconds. You have to depress the one button for about 4 seconds before there is any response. You also have to unlock the keypad every time you adjust any setting after the LCD sleeps (during playback).
Despite these niggles, the player is nearly a perfect balance of form, function, sound, and price. The aluminum frame is a bit sharp on the corners, but I like it. Great design of the buttons and nav. The LCD screen is very good, though some complain of viewing angle, just rotate the player toward you dude. This isn't a player for the whole family to crowd around and watch "Charlie Bit my Finger" on Youtube. The menus and settings are easy to select/nav. I didn't need to read the manual and there has never been a "how do you do that?" moment. Easy to use. Also mentionable, the battery life is good for the size of the player, the radio function and voice notes work well. The radio searches for stations and registers them as presets. Great graphics on the radio and record/playback screens. No it does not record from radio. Love the casette tape playback animation. Very ironic and fun. Don't know if the out jack doubles an an input for a better mic, but I wouldn't expect it at this price point.
The sound quality and custom EQ is really good. As good as Cowon? Probably not, but on par with the Clip and better than iPod. For all you Apple lovers out there, you need to get out more when it comes to sound quality (though they have the best touch control and best apps implementation). This of course requires good headphones and most people use stock ear buds. That said, for the price of this player, the stock ear buds are worth half the price of player at least. They are really good for bundled gear. I'm going to upgrade, but it has become a "no hurry" thing. I have also been listening through my very decent AKG studio monitor head phones and I'm impressed by how well the EQ tailors the already good sound.
Bottom line, this and the Clip+ are kings of the entry level player categories in my opinion. Even if you own a premium player, this is cheap goodness in a sidekick. The Clip gets you expansion, but this has the screen and battery life. If you just listen to music and podcasts, and you like control of your files with drag and drop. If you want good sound without a "touch screen" price or features that complicate your music, then this Q3 may be your best bet. It's no Cowon J3 or iPod touch, but what you get for $54 is phenomenal, especially since you'd have to spend more than that to improve on the bundled earbuds alone.
Note: I don't like any of my music to have "Unknown" album/author or be lacking in cover art. I even customize cover art and tags with an editor to create my own MP3 player "albums." It's easy to do with a little program called "mp3 Tag." You can customize your tags, add cover art or look it up from several databases online. It's not too hard. Search youtube for help. Now all my albums are just as I like to see them on my Q3.
